Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

What is ADAS

What is ADAS and how does it work?

ADAS are driver aids that help the driver and reduce the risk of accidents.

ADAS systems use RADAR, LIDAR, Cameras, ultra sonic sensors and GPS.

ADAS stystems communicate with features including emergency braking AEB,  Lane Assist LKA,  Lane departure LDW,  Adaptive cruise control ACC and Park assist.

What is Radar Technology and what are the different types?

Radar works by transmitting radio waves that reflect off object. Waves travel at a constent speed and in a straight line which enables the sytem to determine their location and distance.

Plused radar uses a single transmitter and receiver which pulses the output to deterimine the objects in range.

Constent radar uses a separate transmitter and receiver and can send continueus signals.

Both methods are designed to prevent the transmitted system leakign in to the receiver

What checks should be made to Radar following repair?

The radar transmitter should be checked for security/damage and reffited. The forward facing radar is calabrated to the vehicle pitch, roll and yaw, upon completion of a wheel alignement calibration of the system can take place

What is LIDAR technology?

LIDAR transmits laser light to map the surrounding area. Light moves at a constant and known speed, a receiver receives the returning light which allows the system to build a 3D image of any other vehicles, pedestrians or property.

What checks should be made to LIDAR following repair?

After removal, replacement or refitting of the windscreen. The forward facing LIDAR is calabrated to the vehicle pitch, roll and yaw, upon completion of a wheel alignement calibration of the system can take place

How does Camera Technology assist in ADAS?

Vehicle camera record images and convert them in to a digital code. This can be used as a primary information source or in combination with other ADAS systems

What checks should be made to Cameras following repair?

After removal, replacement or refitting of the windscreen. The forward facing camera is calabrated to the vehicle pitch, roll and yaw, upon completion of a wheel alignement calibration of the system can take place

What is Ultrasonic Technology?

Ultrasonic tecnology is used for parking aids and consists of a speaker which transmits and microphone to receives sound waves.

What Is GPS?

GPS uses multiple satalites to plot the vehicles position. The position is deterimed by the time the signal take to be sent/received which intern calculates distance the vehicle is from each satalite.

What is Sensor Fusion?

Sensor fusion combines all the different ADAS systems to create a hyrachy in which they operate to best utilise each individual technolgy. Using the strengths of each system to cover the weaknesses.

What factors should be cosidered when calibrating ADAS following the repair of a vehicle?

The vehices chassis alignment should firstly confirmed. If this is correct a steering geometry check can be carried out to confirm the pitch, roll and yaw is within tolerance. The technology should be checked for damage and security, if this is all correct calibration should then be carried out.
